AI PC to Debut in 2024 as the AI PC Ecosystem Connects Various GenAI Technologies

Vice President and Director General of MIC, Chris Hung stated that 2024 will be the debut of AI PCs. While the current specifications and use cases are not yet clearly defined, many manufacturers have already launched new processors with stronger AI computing power and integrated NPU. At the same time, Microsoft also plans to release an updated version of Windows 11 which will be officially integrated with Microsoft Copilot.

Mr. Hung emphasized that AI PCs have 3 major advantages: improved computing response speed, reduced cloud resource costs, and improved privacy and security. As AI PCs need to be integrated with various AI applications depending on the use cases rather than a generalized purpose, major manufacturers will accelerate the development of AI applications to achieve product differentiation.

Grace Wang, Intel Taiwan Vice President & GM, stated that AI can improve vertical markets in various industries. Using the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital as an example, AI and diagnostics models can be used to accurately detect early-stage laryngeal cancer and treat the patients before the cancer advances. Increased demand for AI jobs will also enable the semiconductor industry to reach a market value of USD 1 Trillion by 2030. AI technologies will also unlock more business opportunities in industries such as retail, manufacturing, health, and communications; all of which will benefit from AI PC, enterprise & edge computing, as well as data centers and other fields.

In terms of AI PC products, Intel Core Ultra processors which has been optimized for 500 AI models will enable PCs to directly run generative AI (GenAI) models. Since AI applications require a combination of hardware and software, Intel has cooperated with over 100 software developers from around the world with the AI Acceleration Program. Ms. Wang stated that AI related applications will be present everywhere in the future and will play a vital role in every aspect of life.

ST Liew, VP of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and President of Qualcomm TW, SEA, ANZs stated that GenAI will create new ways for users to interface with their devices. As GenAI development continues, it is expected to lean towards 3 key trends: more LLM applications, the growth of multi-modal models, as well as the increased capabilities of smaller models which can reach more than 10 billion parameters. GenAI is expected to generate up to USD 4.4 Trillion annually. The continued development of GenAI and its increasing complexities will make it difficult for the technology to scale, which will make Hybrid AI a necessity. Hybrid AIs are achieved when simple AI calculations are processed on the device level while the more complex processes are done on the edge cloud, and anything beyond a certain level is uploaded to the central cloud; effectively creating an application-specific LLM to improve performance & efficiency while reducing costs.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon x Elite SoC processor will combine CPU, GPU, and NPU which will not only improve its computing power, but also enable built-in AI functions. Users can also directly use the Qualcomm AI Hub to download hundreds of pre-optimized AI models to quickly improve their workflow. Qualcomm aims to cooperate with a number of OEMs and branded PC manufacturers to launch a new generation of AI PC products which will be launched in COMPUTEX 2024.

Dr. Jason Ma, Engineering Director, ChromeOS, Google Taiwan, stated that GenAI can significantly improve the work efficiency of enterprises and individuals. This is the main reason for various industries to actively introduce GenAI. To provide the benefits of GenAI to more people, Google launched the Gemini LLM model line during Google I/O which includes Gemini Ultra, Gemini Pro, and Gemini Nano which are optimized for different use cases. One of the released models is the Gemini 1.5 Flash which is a streamlined version of the Gemini 1.5 Pro, as well as the interactive Gemini Live.

Google has also launched the lightweight open source model based on the Gemini model, Gemma. The Gemma model will be able to run on applications, hardware devices, mobile devices, or cloud services. Google will also release the new Chromebook Plus with built-in AI functions. Dr. Ma believes that enterprises can improve productivity by using Gemini for Google Workspace which includes Gmail automatic email generation, Meet’s automatic translation functions and minute-taking, Chat’s chat summarizing function, Slide’s text and image generation capabilities, as well as other GenAI functions.

In his keynote speech, Dr. Albert Liu, CEO & Founder of Kneron introduced how to use Kneron’s NPU accelerator, AI chip, and AI algorithms to design personalized GPT applications; which will need to rely on fast, accurate, and lightweight LLM models. Taking the case of edge AI computing, this can be achieved by splitting the AI model to run it on a single chip SoC architecture AI chip with built in NPU; and it will consume less power than a general GPU because users can run the GPT applications on the edge. To facilitate the operations of different Edge GPT functions, users can install or run various Edge GPT software and models the KNEO open platform to reduce development costs.

Among of the main concerns for enterprises considering AI application are data confidentiality and security. To mitigate these concerns, Kneron launched the KNEO-300 which is an NPU powered edge AI server. It offers high computing speed and low energy consumption and can be applied to various enterprise GPT solutions and supports both English and Chinese languages. It has built-in GPT model training services and offline AI servers, further accelerating the deployment speed and meeting the enterprise needs for GPT computing. The entry-level version of the KNEO-300 was already launched in the end of 2023 while the enterprise version of KNEO-330 is expected to be released this year, which will allow SMEs to create their own private GPT applications.
