At the COMPUTEX 2026 Pre-Show Forum, JM Hung, President of E Ink, delivered a speech titled "AI-Powered Retail: From Price Tags to Intelligent Media." Hung explored the integration of AI-powered retail solutions and ePaper technology to create smarter, more efficient shopping experiences. As the retail landscape increasingly blends physical and digital realms, AI is enabling personalized experiences such as predictive shopping assistance and targeted in-store advertising.
Central to E Ink's approach are Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs), deployed at scale to replace traditional paper tags, serving not just as price displays but as a foundation for data collection and operational efficiency. ESLs also enable dynamic, automated discounting for items nearing expiration, helping retailers minimize food waste while optimizing margins based on real-time store performance. Through Interactive Retail Media Networks, sensors allow shelves to detect when a product is removed, triggering immediate, context-aware promotions on ePaper signage, replacing intrusive camera-based monitoring with more consumer-friendly, privacy-conscious alternatives.
On the sustainability front, ePaper offers a low-power, non-distracting alternative to traditional LCD signage. It has the flexibility to display dynamic visual content while consuming minimal power, making it suitable for both indoor retail and outdoor advertising.
Looking ahead, E Ink aims to transition from a hardware provider to a platform partner through various solutions, helping retailers set new industry standards.
